Which came first...the Chicken or the Egg? Ask Chester Fassio!
Were you aware that at 3661 South and 5200 West there was a big Egg Farm? Fassio Egg farm was a large company that supplied eggs all over the valley
Here is the story of the Hunter Utah Egg Farm:
In March 1915, Mr. and Mrs. James Fassio left a Wyoming bakery business to move to Hunter, Utah.
James. Fassio purchased 45 acres of Hunter land ( 3610 S 5200 W) and began a new career in farming. During the first few years, the harvest of wheat found no market so Mr. Fassio traded some wheat for 50 chickens to help eat the grain. This was the beginning of Fassio Egg Farms.
By 1925, the flock grew to 350 layers, and in 1928 the layer operation became the family’s major source of income.
In 1942, Chester Fassio, the eldest son assumed the duties. In the years that followed, the ranch grew to 35,000 layers. Soon after, Fassio Egg Farms became the leading egg producer in the State of Utah. Soon his son Chester Fassio joined the family business.
During this time, the main office, distribution warehouse, and processing plant were established on the original 45 acres in Hunter, Utah.
In the late 1970’s the Fassio expanded the Egg Farm to Erda Utah. By 1991 their Erda Utah site had 86,000 chicken with the capacity of housing 772,000 laying hens.
As you are very aware, In 1980 Hunter had grown and developed into the city of West Valley. The family decided to sell most of the Hunter acreage to a land developer for homes
The Fassio family still had a small farm and corporate offices at 3610 S5200 W. Every egg produced at the Erda ranches were processed, warehoused, and distributed out of the West Valley facility until 2001.
A sub-corporate office still remained at 3664 S 5200 W
