Niels Pederson

Niels was born in Denmark  At the age of 9 he and his family immigrated to America. They crossed the planes by Ox Team and arrived in Salt Lake September 1868. His parents both died just a few days after arriving in Salt Lake. Peder died Oct 10th and Edel on Oct 13 1868.  His parents wrote that it was a "Most Wearisome Journey".

At the time of his parents death Niels was 9 yrs old and became fostered into an English speaking family for 8 years . This foster family helped him learn the English language, yet he endured much hardship with the foster family. As soon as he was old enough, Niels moved and worked for William Barton Milling Company. After raising $600, he purchased a Granger farm at 3800 S 4400W. He married Sarah Grant and they built a larger home.

The Nels and Sarah had 13 children. Nels was known for his kindness yet was always stern with discipline.

He was active in the community serving as president of the South Jordan Canal and was instrumental in getting a pumping plant for the Jordan River. The Pump plant  gave Granger  irrigation water that could rival any in the State. He served as school trustee, organized the West side Commercial Club and the 33rd South state highway. He was dependable and efficient in every aspect of his life.
