George Floor
George's parents were born in Greece and immigrated to America. George was born in Garfield, near Magna and the Great Salt Lake. He was a hardworking kid and enjoyed sports. Here is an article from 1931
His son George II shared some wonderful thing about his father. I think you will find them fascinating. "George moved to Los Angeles in 1936 to make a name for himself. He started working at the famous bar called the Coconut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel where he learned all of the ins and outs of bar-tending and the bar business. In Los Angeles, he met his first wife Helen Callas. With Helen, he had four children Nick, Jim, Greg, and Kathy.
George soon began working at Douglas Aircraft as a riveter apprentice. He had a brilliant mind for engineering and was self-taught with no formal college education. He was promoted to the design and engineering team and soon began designing wings for the DC-3(C-47millitary version). This aircraft had a huge impact during WWII.
In 1949 He left Douglas Aircraft at the request of his father to return to SLC to run his father’s bar the Golden Gate. He also lined up a job at Ajax Presses which was owned by Nick Strike, a childhood friend.
In the mid 50’s, George moved back to California to work at Randall Engineering, a machine Shop in Culver City. The company handled Gov’t contracts for Air-force and Navy airplanes designing and building Hydraulic systems. George had a strong influence on improving the design of the systems used to stop airplanes as they landed on aircraft carriers.
In 1962 he moved back to Salt Lake City to run his father’s private club in downtown SLC. He also returned working for Ajax Presses. This time he was head of R&D. With his knowledge from engineering at Randall Engineering he had an influence on the design of the silk press, as well as, invented and received patents on the blower that was used at the time in the dry cleaning business. Ajax presses and all of these designs were sold to G.E.
In 1968 George met Rosie Mattingly and married her. He moved to Granger, UT and had two more sons Stathi and George II. This is where he decided to start his own private club called the Red Feather. "
We knew George as the friendly owner of the Red Feather Lounge. The lounge was in the Granger Shopping Center just off Market Street from 1968-1989. He had such a big heart and enormous personality
His son Stathi Floor shared this, about his father. "My Dad's motto was ": Where Friends Meet Friends. The Red Feather lived up to his motto. Everyone from the Granger area would go there, even if they didn't drink alcohol, just to eat and socialize with their community neighbors."
George Floors made Granger Utah better by being not only being a great business owner but by being a friend to all.
The Red Feather was located in the Granger Shopping Center just over from the Old Francesco's. It sat where the Old Toys-R-Us parking lot sat. His son also said "It was a fun place to grow up."
Georg's business cards with his "Simple Arithmetic" lesson on the back let's you see into his motto of taking care of the community and the community. Even with our completely digitized world, it's as true and "simple" today as it was then!
George was generous, hospitable and....was grateful for all that he received.
He "Subtracted the Pants...and that was his profit!
