"Grandpa Hale"

William Hale was known to most Granger children as "Grandpa Hale"

William Hale bought the grand Nielson Home at 3075 W 3500 South. He raised 600 chickens in his backyard coops and called it Hale Poultry. People would come from miles around to buy fresh eggs and he sold them to various stores. William was also a very familiar face on 3500 South. He was a crossing guard for the school children

In his obituary his family wrote:

“He did not find dynasty nor build an empire, but he accomplished more- he enjoyed and loved life, was adored by his family and had the love and respect of countless friends. He was a gentleman, always dear, thoughtful, considerate and kind. By his example he implanted the real truth of living and practiced the golden rule”.

"He was one of the kindest fathers ever to walk the earth, faithful to his word and to God. None of his children ever heard him say an unkind word to his wife."

Here is the People you Know article

the Murray Eagle dated 12/10/1959

"A familiar face in Granger is that of William W. Hale, long-time resident, well known to inhabitants of the area.  Newcomers, children in particular, will recognize him as the safety patrol officer, who helps students from the Granger School across 3500 south before and after school.

He is proud, and rightly so, that he is able to earn a living at the age of 81. He also raises chickens and with the help of his wife, prepares the eggs for market and sells them.

He was born in a isolated farmhouse in Gentile Valley in Idaho. His parents moved to St Charles, Idaho "near the beautiful Bear Lake" and he was baptized in the lake by a grandson of Brigham Young, Lorenzo Young.

He had earlier been blessed by a member of the Twelve Apostles of the time, Moses Thather. His father, Aroet Lucius Hale, later heard of Star Valley Wyoming and decided, to settle there.

"Talk about pioneering new country, this was it. The closest town was fifty miles: there were other cabins in the valley, but none in sight, to us, "Mr. Hale recalled.

He first left home at the age of 21, to heard sheep a few hundred miles away. He was given time off for the 24th of July.

Although he was able to catch rides the majority of the way, we walked a total of 44 miles in 24 hours to arrive home just as the Pioneer Meeting let out.

The following year while working with sheep, his brother searched him out on horseback, to deliver a letter from the church offices, calling him to a mission in West Virginia. "The most profitable years of my life", he noted.

Upon returning home he worked for a creamery, "doing freighting mostly", At the time he was working on the Stake Sunday School Board and while visiting one ward he met Ella Brown.

She had been working away and had just returned to live with her aunt.

it was love a t first meeting and five months later they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. He and his brother went into the dairy business and raised one of the finest herds in the area at the time.

Ten children were born to Ella and William. One, a twin, died in infancy. The family lived in Star Valley for 25 years.

Mrs. Hale had always had a desire to move to Utah and in 1930 they moved to Granger, They bought a home with 15 acres of ground and chicken coops.

However the depression had begun and with eggs at 10 cents a dozen they were unable to finish paying for their property. They borrowed money and began again.

All the Hale children were married, except one daughter, when his wife died in 1943. When his daughter married, he turned his business over to a son and traveled, visited his children, and worked at odd jobs for a time.

In 1949 he met and married a widow, Dorthy Wilson, and spent several happy years until she too passed away. Then in 1956 he married a native of Star Valley, whom he met while she was in Salt Lake visiting her children.

Mr Hale is now 70 and his children who are : Carol Luthi, Star Valley: Elfonda Baker, Castro Valley, Calif: Nathan Hale, Glendale, Calif: Norman Hale, Midvale: Ellis Hale, Granger, Stanford Hale, Salt Lake City: Verlene Yancy, Taylorsville: Willma Haun, West Jordan: and Lloyd Hale, now deceased.

Mr & Mrs Hale are active members of the Granger 3rd Ward . He is a High Priest and has served in many and varied capacities in the wards and stakes in which he has lived. He has been a ward teacher all his life.”
