First KD Novelty...Later Piece Goods

Getting to Know Kenneth Taylor

People you know: Dated November 1958 Kenneth Taylor of KD Novelty

Owning and operating one’s own business seems to be the desire of a great many men these days. Such a man is Kenneth Taylor of Granger.
It is not always easy, however and demands a great deal of confidence and a bit of gambling spirit to begin with.
Ken lives in the Hillsdale Subdivision at 3250 Pearce Street and with the opening of his KD Novelty Company about a year ago has been in business for himself twice in his lifetime.
He was born in Cowley Wyoming and later moved to Salt Lake City where he spent most of his youth directly across the street from the famed Temple Square.
A graduate of West High, ken also attended and graduated from Billings Business College in Montana.
“How did I end up in Montana”? Ken queried, “Well. When I was released from the Army, I got as far as Billings and I was broke…so I just stayed!”
Ken sold insurance for a time in Billings and then that desire to go on “his own” prompted him to go into the soft-water business and later a partnership.
Before his marriage, which was in 1942, Kenneth was a professional roller skater. “I taught roller skating and figure-skating” he commented. “That was when I was still young”, ken chuckled.
Prior to his service with the army Ken served a mission in the Southern States for the LDS church. He has been active in his church duties since that time, and at present is on the High Council of the Granger Stake.
Kenneth is married to the former Doris May Jensen and they have 4 children, Penny Ann, Charles, Mary Jo and Launi Jean make up the quartet that keep their parents busy.
The Taylors have lived in Granger almost 5 years and now own and operate an interesting business which is named for Kenneth and Doris. They are wholesale distributors of novelties and hobby-craft materials, serving church, school, PTA and private groups as well a hobby shops etc.
Ken is on the road a considerable part of the time touring southern Idaho, southern Utah and parts of Wyoming. Doris runs the shop when Ken is away.
It is really interesting catering to carnivals, selling party decorations, balloons, crepe paper etc., the couple reports. Ken and Doris seem to love it and are working up a good business from their store in Granger.

Side Note:   Ken and Doris became partners with 2 others (cousin). Ken sold his portion of KD Novelty and put his efforts into Piece Goods on 3500 south and then built a larger location across from the big Smiths KD Novelty on 1950 West. .

The Smith's became full owners of KD Novelty, built a large store on 1950 west.
