People You Know dated 1959 Fairbourne Family
An active and interesting couple with 2 lovely talented daughters is our selection this week for Know Your Neighbor.
Mr & Mrs George Eldon Fairbourne reside in their newly-built home at 3765 s 3200 w. Many of their Granger neighbors are already familure with this couple due to their many interests and participation in community activities.
George has lived in the community the major part of his life. A son of Mr & Mrs George W Fairbourne, he was raised in Bacchus, but moved to Granger while still a young man.
Talented in many fields, he was once a professional musician, still loves music, and at one time played with an orchestra on a program for KDYL. At present George is a salesman for the Deseret Book Co. Prior to this, however he sold real estate.
He’s always been dabbling in real estate, claims his wife Ferne.
He has been building rental units of late as a sideline to his regular position.
I was while with KDYL that George became acquainted with his wife to be. Ferne sang with the By Woodbury orchestra at KDYL, and although she and George had actually gone to school together at Cyprus, they beam interested in one another while working together on programs at the studio.
George played the guitar and sang and Ferne also loved music and was becoming well known for her singing when they were married in 1940 in Salt Lake.
Mrs Fairbourne is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Thorley Pearce formerly of Magna. Her parents now reside in Salt Lake. She is a graduate of Cyprus, and studied voice at the McCune School of Music.
Along with her music, Ferne was interested in becoming a beautician and studied in that field which has now become a profession for her. Employed by ZCMI for 2 yrs and then at Excels for almost 6yrs. Ferne finally decided to go on her own.
She started a small business in her home and worked there for many years. Many ladies in Granger have been made more beautiful at the Fairbourne Home on 35th south over the years.
“Somehow it has just grown” Ferne says.
She now operates Ferne’s Beauty Box in Granger and has 4 other girls working for her. It has truly developed into a full-fledged profession for this talented young mother.
George and Ferne are extremely proud of their 2 daughters.
Julynne is 16 and attends Granger High School. She is a lovely active teenager, and has been given many honors in her young life.
She was a drum majorette at Valley junior High for 3yrs and was chosen Basketball Queen while in the 7th grade there. While attending Cyprus she was also a majorette and twirler with the band and was chosen as 1st attendant to the Sophomore Queen.
At Granger High this year, she is head Cheerleader and was voted “Most Preferred Girl at Granger High”. It seems her honors and talents are considerable and her mom beams when she tells of her also being head twirler with the band and secretary of the Pep Club at school. This young lady hasn’t stopped there; however, she plays the piano and alo the organ.
She has her own small organ, and has taken it to play at weddings, programs etc. all over the valley, Mrs Fairbourne proudly says
Their youngest, Sharla is 10yrs old and a student at Granger Elementary, Not to be outdone by big sister, Sharla is studying the piano and has a beautiful voice. With a lot of help from her mother, Sharla has developed into a singer of some note. She has performed on many varied programs in her church and school functions.
George and Ferne are active in the Granger Ward of the LDS church. With work in the MIA, Sunday School and Music Departments, George is at present 1st counselor in the Sunday School and has been Superintendent of the MIA when they were in the Granger 3rd Ward.
Ferne has participated in Road Shows and in a musical capacity in every ward to which they have belonged. She is now the Ward Choristers.
When asked about hobbies, Ferne and George will say “I guess our only hobby would be our music” We don’t care to hunt or fish, and don’t find too much time for hobbies.
The girls both have a hobby though…it’s a horse! They have their own pony and both love to ride.
