Scott and Vinita Smith and their legacy with KD Novelty

KD Novelty: A Landmark of Creativity and Community
In Honor of Scott and Vinita Smith

Long before big-box stores and online ordering, there was a place in Granger, Utah that sparked imagination and brought families and neighbors together—KD Novelty. For over 40 years, this charming craft and hobby shop was a beloved community staple, lovingly operated by Scott and Vinita Smith, a couple whose dedication and creativity left a lasting mark on all who stepped through their doors.

Scott Smith, a man known for his strong values and hardworking nature, originally owned the popular Scott’s Drive-In, a well-loved food joint later purchased by Buzz and Carolyn Burt. But his passion eventually turned toward creating a space where people could gather supplies—and inspiration—for all kinds of creative pursuits. He purchased KD Novelty from K & D Taylor and transformed it into something truly special.

Those who remember KD Novelty speak of it with affection that runs deep. The glass cases at the front of the store were always filled to the brim with craft ideas, catching the eye of children and adults alike. Inside, it felt like there were miles and miles of bins, filled with every ribbon, bead, button, sequin, and tool imaginable. One visitor recalled, “All my memories of KD Novelty are very vivid. I can smell the store, taste the soda pop I bought at the front counter, hear the sounds—it’s imprinted on my brain.”

Scott and Vinita ran the store as a true “Ma & Pa” shop—personally involved in every detail, always ready to offer guidance, encouragement, or simply a warm hello. Scott was often the first to arrive in the morning and the last to lock up at night. He was not only a respected businessman, but also a spiritual leader, serving faithfully in many church callings, including as a beloved Bishop Smith in the LDS Church.

Vinita brought boundless creativity and energy to the store. She was known for designing craft displays, sharing instructions, and making sure that anyone who walked in left feeling empowered to make something beautiful. Together, the Smiths created more than a business—they built an oasis of creativity, family, and community spirit.

To those who knew him, Scott Smith was more than a shopkeeper. He was a mentor and friend: “I knew Scott Smith well. He gave me sound business and personal advice. He was an outstanding family and business man. I often miss the Ma & Pa shops of yesterdays.”

KD Craft and Novelty wasn’t just a store—it was a landmark, a legacy, and a labor of love. The Smiths’ dedication helped nurture generations of crafters, creators, and dreamers. Their memory continues to inspire those who remember the joy of browsing those shelves, sipping soda pop, and getting lost in possibility.

It now houses the DT Auto Brokers and is filled with wonderful vehicles.
