The story about a hero named Bert

Growing up I often heard the story of a local Hero named Bert.

Here is what I was told.

Albert "Bert" Newbold was born in England and immigrated to America as a young man on his own. His parents came a few years later.

He was a dedicated member of the Taylorsville/Bennion community

He drove the School Wagon and School Bus for 24 years.

On September 27, 1933, Bert picked up 61 students from Plymouth School on his School Bus.

As he was driving them home he realized that he was losing consciousness. He used all his might to quickly pushed the bus out of gear so the bus would slowly roll to a stop.

He passed away at the wheel and all 61 students were unhurt.

Bert is a true hero. He was always so dedicated to the safety of the children. Bert didn't live in Granger, Hunter or Chesterfield but he lived just a few blocks away from us.
