John was born in Millcreek about 4500 S 1300 E

John and his brother Henry spent many "barefoot afternoons herding cows on the Mount Olympus bench near the mouth of Millcreek Canyon. They were often joined by local Indian boys who engaged them in wrestling matches, and taught the young pale faces how to swim quickly and silently in the clear mountain streams and ponds".

John & Henry got 40 acres just east of 3600 west and both north and south of 3500 South. John also got a dry farm in Kearns and other areas.

Life was hard in Granger.  The soil was near impossible to farm, the water came out filthy from the wells and needed to be boiled, there were no trees on the property and crops struggled in the clay soil

Aside from his duties as a husband and farmer, he was very involved in the church and community.

  • He served in the bishopric for almost 40 years.
  • A hardworking Farmer
  • The Trustees of the District School
  •  A member of the Farm Bureau
  • Involved in the Salt Lake County canal and irrigation system
  •  He and his brother drove the first flowing well in the area with a sledgehammer to a depth of 100'
  • Love hard work and never relaxed before the days job was done
  • His days were spent in heavy farm work on his various pieces of property
  • Often said  “Any work honorably done, regardless of the nature of that work, should be done well and a man should be proud when the job is finished.”
  • John built the best looking grain stacks in Granger
  • He was a very loving or gentle father
  • Sang to his children daily & greeted them with a kiss.
  • Every morning at breakfast, John would lead his little tribe in a song, a quotation of scripture, family prayer, and a blessing on the food
  •  John sat on the committee that raised funds for a larger and more beautiful building church after the explosion
  • In 1907-1909 he served a 2 1/2 yr mission to  England.
  • The whole Bawden family arose each day at 5am and worked until sunset
  • John Howard Bawden died in 1937
