Following the legal challenges in August 1965
The Westown Shopping Center at 3500 South and 4000 West faced significant obstacles that ultimately prevented the original grand vision from materializing.
The legal disputes and the emergence of competing developments, particularly the Valley Fair Mall, diverted attention and resources away from Westown.Despite these setbacks, the site did not remain dormant. Over the ensuing decades, it evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. The area transformed into a medium-sized shopping center, hosting various businesses such as Alpha-Beta, Skaggs, and Allied. More recently, it became known as Mercado Plaza Del Sol, accommodating a diverse array of vendors. The Family Thrift Store was also a notable tenant until its recent departure.
In addition to commercial developments, the surrounding acreage saw the construction of several apartment and condominium complexes, further integrating the area into the fabric of the community. While the original Westown Shopping Center plans were never fully realized, the site has remained a vibrant and well-loved part of the neighborhood for over 60 years.
