It Began With....
In 1883 Joseph Fairbourn purchased 10 acres of land. He used one of his barns as a Blacksmith shop. The community often called this area as both "Fairbourn Corner" and "The Calder Station". He used the old Ephriam Smith home as the PostOffice & Small Store. Later he had a weighing scales to weigh grain, produce etc.
The Old Granger Ward House stood on this corner for over 5 decades. It was originally built in 1884. The exact address was 3189 W 3500 So.
In 1905 the gas heater exploded and the walls collapsed. The beautiful Nellie Mackay died in the explosion.
Within 3 weeks the ground was broken for a new church. With much hard work from the residents this beautiful 2 story building was built. It was the 1st building in Granger area with Electric Lights.
If you look closely at this Aerial Shot you can see the Bawden barn/garage just south of the church.
Dee Jay Bawden tells about it like this "My grandfather built this double garage before I was born. It was used to fix many ward member's cars who couldn't afford a mechanic to do it. My grandfather was a retired mechanic and fixed their cars with great joy. We rebuilt my dad's jeep in here after our scout master blew the engine. I cant believe it is still standing".
NOW
The amazing architect Ron Mohlen, the man that designed the Sid's Barber Shop building and the Westshire Homes subdivision also designed these offices..
This little piece of land HAS HAD some precious things on it.
This little piece of land STILL HAS some precious things on it.
