From SLC to Payson from Granger to Magna
Someone in Granger saved this beauty!
The "Orem Line" opened in 1915 and closed in the late 1940's. You could ride from Granger to Magna every 2 hours.
This “Big Red Cars,” was extra fancy in her prime and was 40' long and 9' wide. In her prime there was lots of mahogany wood used as well as leather upholstery. She had interior lights, and was heated. There were storage racks and she was simply charming.
She carried passengers, freight, mail & basically anything that needed to go from Granger to Magna or Salt Lake to Payson. They speculate that she was often used to haul products more often than people. Built in 1914 of steel & wood. Originally it had windows but was remodeled to fit the needs
In the late 1940's, many pieces of the Orem line were sold to the Denver-Rio Grande, The Bamberger Line, Lehi Cereal Mill or sold for scrap.
I don't know how this Granger Utah family acquired this wonderful piece of history, but I am so glad that they were able to preserve it. For many years the family used it as a storage shed.
Many years ago this wonderful piece was donated to the Ogden Union Station Museum (Utah State Railroad Museum.). Sadly vandalism/fire at the Ogden Station caused damage to one end, flooring, wall and some roof.
