A man who had been a butcher most of his life, a rancher part-time and a busy husband and father decided to open a small corner grocery . IT was called Mellor Market from 1953-968
Many people in Granger have made trips to the small corner store on 3200 west and 3500 south in Granger. The Mellor’s Market is owned still today by John Mellor and is now called The Mellor’s Market Basket.
Expansion has fit into the picture as Granger has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 10 yrs since the small store opened on the corner. Now a larger store stands surrounded by other shops and buildings.
Mr Mellor was born in Sugarhouse in Salt Lake and later moved to Concord California with his parents Mr & Mrs Frank Mellor. His parents still reside there.
John attended Irving School in Sugarhouse and also Mount Diabio in California. He attended 2 yrs. at St Mary’s College in concord also.
While in California he met and married his wife, the former Fay Campbell from Eugene Oregon while she was visiting a brother. They were married in 1929.
Returning to Utah, the Mellors decided to buy a ranch and Granger seemed the spot in which to settle. The ranch was run for several years and then Mr Mellor decided to expand by buying a store.
The Market Basket was remodeled in 1952 and became a larger store to accommodate the larger population.
The Mellor’s are the proud parents of 7 children, 5 girls and 2 boys. Their children are rather scattered at present with one girl living in Rose Park, one in Washington and one in Ogden. They have a son in California and the other 3 children are still living at home.
Mary attends Granger Elementary and Francis is a sophomore at Granger High. Their other son Robert will not be home for long, however as he leaves May 1st for an LDS mission to the Eastern States.
Mrs Mellor plays the organ and piano both at home and for her Ward.
We have 10 grandchildren! Mr Mellor beam. Of Course we are very proud of them also.
Mr Mellor has lived with his family at 3035 W 3855 So in Granger since the time of the sale of his ranch and says he loves it in Granger.
We appreciate the people of Granger very much, he reports.
In a grocery store one gets to know a great many people and Mr Mellor has found a lot of friends in the neighborhood where he first decided to be a rancher until progress caught up with him.
