Where were you October 1961?
Did you know there was a UFO sighting over Granger Utah? It was seen flying over the Utah Central Airport (that was the Granger Airport on 3200 west) Taken from the Deseret News October 3,1961
Air Force officials Tuesday were investigating reports by at least 8 observers, including a veteran pilot, that a "Flying Saucer" was seen hovering over the Southern Salt Lake Valley Monday.
Investigation teams from Hill Air Force Base Monday questioned the observers, including pilot Waldo J Harris who was the 1st to sight the Unidentified object.
Mr Harris was preparing to take off on a routine flight Monday shortly before noon from Utah Central Airport (3200 W 2100 S), when he saw the object south of the field.
Harris said he was about 5 miles from the disc when he first sighted it and attempted to close in on the object. "When I got about 3 miles from the object, it suddenly moved upward like an elevator and began to move south.
The object had no visible portholes or exhaust smoke.
it was flying at about 6500 to 7000 feet, Mr Harris told HAFB security officers.
7 Witnesses on the ground said they saw the object. All witnesses said they watched it for 15 minutes.
Among them were the operators of the airport, Mr & Mrs Jay Galbraith, Clyde Card and Duane Sinclair ... who were preparing for a flight from Utah Central Airport. Robert Butler..an employee of Ute Automotive, based at the field, Russ Woods..an airport employee and Virgil Redmond who had just landed.
Air Force security investigators conducted a routine investigation of the sightings Monday afternoon. Their findings are being forwarded to Washington, DC for evaluation.
"At first I thought it was another plane while I was waiting for takeoff, but when I was airborne I was surprised to find the object was still in the same position" Mr Harris said.
"I changed my heading and flew toward the large disc. It hovered with a rocking motion". the Salt Lake insurance salesman-pilot told investigators.
"The object was light grew and measured at least 50 feet across and about 4 feet thick a the widest point" Mr Harris claimed.
"I am sure it was a controlled craft from the performance during my observation" Mr Harris continued.
The pilot said he followed the "saucer" when it began its flight and then was able to observe it again when it suddenly halted almost directly over Utah Lake Radio Range Station.
During the chase Mr Harris maintained radio communications with Utah Central Airport, Provo Airport and relayed information to the FAA communications tower at the Salt Lake Municipal Airport.
Mrs Leonard Higgins (3155 Grace St-3100 So) said she saw 'a round silvery object that flew from west to east, and was too high and to fast for a helicopter, and which had a red light that went off and on".
She had just attended a PTA meeting at Canyon Rim School and five other persons saw it too, Mrs Higgins quoted one of the viewers as saying "I've just seen a flying saucer".
Local weather Bureau officials said they had no weather balloons aloft at the time of the reported sightings
