The Safe...wasn't safe!

Burglar Steals Granger Safe January 1959
In a daring early morning burglary Saturday, robbers broke into The Merc Department Store and hauled off a 1,500-lb safe containing approximately $2,600 in checks and cash.
Deputy Sheriff, NC Pete Hayward, who investigated, reported the burglars broke open the back door of the firm and used a store dolly to transport the big safe out through the rear door into tan alley. It was apparently loaded onto a waiting truck.
Max Leslie, manager and part owner of the store discovered the burglary when he arrived to open for business. The Merc is located at 3580 s 2800 West in the Granger Shopping Center.
