Al Warr

Al Warr was a life-long resident of Granger After attending Monroe Elementary School, Mr Warr went to work on his father’s farm. He later ran a threshing machine and was employed at Kennecott Copper for several years. From 1935-1942 he worked for American Smelting and Refining Company Firing Roasters.
He was a  member of the Granger Lions Club, he has served as president and director and was a charter member of the organization He was active in all aspects of the community.

Al was a beloved Granger Business Man. His business Granger Cold Storage- Meat Locker opened in October 1939 and contained 185 lockers. In 1948 the capacity was expanded to 550 lockers and in 1956 to 800 lockers with the completion of two new additions. Later his Cold Storage turned into a restaurant called The Potato Pit..

When Al Warr opened his locker plant at 3272 W 3500 So he entered the venture with only a smattering of knowledge concerning the business.
I was green when I opened the plant Mr Warr recalled. I knew very little about the business and nothing about cutting meat.
With charts to aid him, Mr Warr quickly learned the art of meat cutting.
You might say that I took the hard way of learning he chuckled.
The plant was opened in October of 1939 and contained 185 lockers. In 1948 the capacity was expanded to 550 lockers and in 1956 to 800 lockers with the completion of two new additions.
A life-long resident of Granger, he is the son of David W and Mary E Warr. Both of his parents are deceased. After attending Monroe Elementary School, Mr Warr went to work on his father’s farm. He later ran a threshing machine and was employed at Kennecott Copper for several years.
From 1935-1942 he worked for American Smelting and Refining Company Firing Roasters. He started construction of his plant in the summer of 1939 completing it by October.
It is the 1st and only locker plant in Granger. Mr. Warr pointed out proudly. The idea to open such a business came while I was visiting in Idaho and toured a locker plant. Through it would be a pretty good business to enter so I did.
He noted that there had been many changes in the area since he was a youngster.
There is better than four times as much here as when I was a youth he explained. Most of the growth has come to the area in the past 6 years.
He married the former Lenore Orr of Granger on February 16,127. The Warrs have resided at 366 W 3500 S since their marriage.
They have one son Ronald Lee Warr, 25 who helps his father at the plant.
A former member of the Granger Lions Club, he has served as president and director and was a charter member of the organization. He also is a member of the Granger 4th Ward.
His main hobbies are gardening and raising flowers. He explained that with the opening of a new bowling alley nearby (Delton bowling Lanes) he may take up the sport as a hobby.

Did you know in the 40's owning a freezer was a luxury and so Granger folks would rent a frozen locker here at Al Warrs Granger Cold Storage. Al was also a meat cutter and cut wild game - Murray Eagle Newspaper-
